Those who oppose same-sex marriage can draw lessons from fight against slavery

Seeking to encourage social conservative activists to persevere in the fight against same-sex marriage, Faith and Freedom Coalition founder Ralph Reed drew parallels between the ongoing debate over marriage equality and the nation’s long struggle over slavery and civil rights for African-Americans. Speaking to about 40 attendees at an afternoon breakout session during the organization’s annual “Road to Majority” conference in Washington, D.C. on Friday, Reed gave a speech in which he suggested the 1857 Dred Scott Supreme Court decision —which ruled that African American slaves remained the property of their owners even if they traveled to or resided in free states — held a lesson for contemporary conservative activists concerned about what they see as[Read More…]

Gay UK priest faces wrath of angry bishops over his marriage

UK priest Jeremy Pemberton has had some of his duties as a priest revoked by bishops because he is in a same-sex marriage with another man. A UK Anglican priest has had some of his authority as a clergyman stripped away, after bishops learned he is married to another man. Tamar Iveri outed as homophobe on eve of Australian performances

Georgian soprano causes outrage for describing LGBT people as “faecal matter”.   Georgian soprano Tamar Iveri, scheduled to sing Desdemona in Otellofor Opera Australia in July and Tosca later this year in Melbourne, has been roundly condemned for an open letter she wrote to the Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili in May last year. In the lengthy diatribe, originally posted on her Facebook page, she describes LGBT people as “deviants” and suggests that homosexuality is part of the “faecal mass” being foisted on Georgia by the West. Iveri’s outburst came on the back of a rally organised by LGBT activists and other Georgian citzens to mark International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia[Read More…]
